An intense, true-to-life story about the reality of life behind the trappings of fame, proving that Dave Barbarossa is not only an influential musician but also a gifted writer. Growing up amidst the casual racism in London in the 1970's, Harry plunges as a 15-year old into the world of rock 'n' roll finding purpose and redemption with its adventure, he finally transforms from boy to man.
Laura Reinberger Vive Le Rock!
The characters are portrayed with such care and attention to their individual complexities that it's obvious that Barbarossa has taken time to understand and treasure them. Stereotypes and flat character are few and far between. It really is a character driven piece and a well written one at that.
Lizzie Alderdice Louder that War
Harry Ferdinand is a misplaced North London teenager - in trouble at school, his dad hates him, a victim of racism who flees to a hippy squat where he discovers a drum kit, and then punk…There is little in the way of boil-in-the-bag anarchy here, and the real heart of the novel is Harry trying impress his uninterested and estranged father, punk's lost boy screaming to fit in over the music's iconoclastic and methamphetamine roar.

Mud Sharks edition by Dave Barbarossa Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well written in a way that made me feel deeply. Real grit.
Set in the late '70's, this is a gritty story of a young man's journey from an abusive homelife to feeling like an outcast amongst his teen peers to escaping and ultimately finding success as a musician in London's burgeoning punk rock scene. You cannot help but root for "Harry", the main character as he goes through the emotional tidal waves that growing up does - Mr. Barbarossa captures the emotions perfectly - he delivers a universal theme that anyone can relate to. And you can't help but appreciate being absorbed into such a story. Please - buy a copy; it's a fantastic read.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Mud Sharks is self-described as "A powerful, nostalgic story of a boy growing up in 1970s London" where the main character, Harry Ferdinand, "confronts racism, violence and the reality behind the trappings of fame." Author and iconic drummer Dave Barbarossa, having achieved acclaim during the late 1970s and early 1980s in Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow, writes from first-hand knowledge about the experiences of Harry, whose teenage years are marred by abuse and anguish and who responds by way of bouts of rebellion.
Harry's resilience is extraordinary as he discovers the love of drumming which serves not only as an outlet for his pent-up frustrations but ultimately proves a vehicle for fame. Fame, however, proves in many ways to be more bizarre than the world of his youth, leaving Harry in a constant quest to find the stability that has eluded him. His is a story of transitions, some more positive than others as he and his companions fight battles well-associated with music stardom.
Although Mud Sharks is a billed as a novel, understanding the author's background is sure to leave the informed reader trying to separate fact from fiction. It is possible, for example, that the book represents a reality in which the names were changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Thus, the book is entirely believable, especially for anyone who has been around the music industry in any capacity (much less survived one's teenage years).
Barbarossa's writing style is surprisingly poetic, even though the reader (especially one not versed in British working class language) is often left resorting to context clues to decipher the slang he uses to express the late 1970s punk culture. Complicating matters is the occasional use of time-jumping, which can sometimes serve to confuse the reader as to place and time. However, these issues are minor and do not detract from the value of the work, which despite its length reads quickly and interestingly. Especially intriguing are the layers the author peels away from main characters, whose vulnerabilities are exposed from beneath their brash punk auras. Mud Sharks is entertaining to say the least and is a must for anyone trying to understand this important musical era.

Mud Sharks
A brilliant novel from first time author Dave Barbarossa. One time drummer for Adam and the Ant and drummer for Bow Wow Wow.
An insightful authentic story of the Punk Movement / Scene in London. Dave’s standpoint is deeply personal and eye opening.
