Choosing Off the Grid eBook J David Cox Sally J Davies

Choosing Off the Grid by J. David Cox, is entertaining, challenging and insightful. The book is fast paced with a dialogue between Dave and his wife Sally about their newest life journey. Conversationally written, this book raises and discusses many of the issues encountered as they go from the cul-de-sac to Off The Grid living. On a remote island they set about building a water supply, producing electricity with solar panels and a wind generator and building from scratch their home. This tale is at times gripping, funny but never boring as they both acquire new skills to meet their OTG challenges together. An excellent and instructive read! Highly recommended! Five stars.

Choosing Off the Grid eBook J David Cox Sally J Davies Reviews

Excellent reference guide and a good read
don't care to know how to build a house.
A very comfortable read. Like sitting in a cozy chair and having David and Sally walk you through the whole off the grid experience and philosophy. Tons of solid practical advice and some brilliant "out of the box" ideas. A book I will re-read many times, and a book I will recommend to others.
This book nicely helped pass last night while I sat in an airport after our 8PM flight was finally cancelled at 1130PM and was waiting for the next flight at 6AM the next day. The book was great and It was quite thought provoking. It reminded me of the old folk song about little boxes made of ticky tacky. The author invites you to have the creativity and courage to choose your own life goals, not just blindly follow what everyone else does. David and Sally say that doing choosing to step outside the normal way of living is an adventure, that while risky can pay huge dividends in making your life much much richer. At the end of the book I believed them and am inspired to do something special with the rest of my life.

David Cox must have had this idea of living off the grid building inside him for decades as he lived a typical middle class life raising his kids. Once the kids were fledged he and his wife Sally took their life savings and went for it. The book says that if you work really hard for a long time, learn as much as you can, plan VERY carefully and are healthy you can make the chances of prospering in the adventurous life you want much higher than you might think. David and Sally say you will accomplish things and stretch your mind in ways that most people do not think is possible if you dare to step outside of the typical. There are specific pointers in the book for off the grid living, such as you are probably not going to find the place to live on the web or at a real estate agent, and how ingenuity, cleverness, precision and attention to detail can greatly reduce costs. However this book is not a how to book as much as an effort to get readers to lift their vision up and think about what they really want to do with their life. The book encourages you to go for it in a way that will be successful.

The message I took from the book was to pick your goals from the heart but execute them from the head. Just pursuing a dream without the planning and work to make it happen is silly but not living your life well is a waste. I really liked the book.
Another great read by David, who offers his honest " how to go off the grid advice" about all the things you need to know like; cost, where to place the house, electricity, insurance, and a host of other things to consider. The book is well written, funny and fascinating even for a person like me who would never leave urban life. David's wife Sally tweets her version in the background and I had the same laugh out loud moments reading this book as I did their first book. I guess I'm living vicariously through their adventures and at heart I'm a wannabe 'off the gridder'.
Choosing Off the Grid is a perfect follow up to the first book Our Life Off the Grid published in 2015. In this second book the author is really generous with practical considerations and how tos. At the same time David's writing style flows like an easy conversation complete with oodles of 'laugh out loud' situations and "gripping" anecdotes.
In this second book his wife Sally is featured as a Raven adding comments here and there. These are perfectly placed and they give readers a taste of her perspective and strong character. Together, they are a winning pair of co-supervisors to be sure!
This was an enjoyable read. It's the perfect book to read if you are questioning your priorities in life and considering an alternative way to live. The author highlights the challenges of living off the grid and offers insightful guidance about things to consider prior to making the move. Issues such as location, money, and basic construction guidance were provided in an insightful manner. I liked how information was provided from two perspectives, David and his wife Sally. At times I would have liked more information about some specific aspects of building off the grid, however this book provided a great foundation for key things to consider. This book provides more information than his previous witty and amusing book ‘Our Life off the Grid.’ I liked it!
